NOVA’s Career Development Fair is an opportunity for students entering the workforce, professionals interested in a career change and advocates looking for professional growth. You’ll gain in-depth knowledge about the field of victim advocacy and crisis response, understand the variety of positions and organizations in which advocates serve, and build connections with hiring organizations! Through discussion-based webinars and presentations, our diverse group of agency partners provide participants with information about current services and how aspiring advocates and crisis responders can enter into this fulfilling career. NOVA's Annual Career Development Fair

February 18-20, 2025

Join NOVA for this FREE event! Spanning over 3 days at 12:00pm – 4:00pm ET, new and aspiring advocates will have the opportunity to hear from experts in the field about their roles, career paths, challenges and advice. Please note there are no CEUs for attending this event.

Schedule

Day 1: Introduction to Advocacy

  • Introduction to Victim Advocacy 12:00pm - 1:00pm ET

    Gain a foundational understanding of victim advocacy and learn about trauma-informed practice.

  • Introduction to NOVA 1:00pm - 1:30pm ET

    Understand the history of the National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA) and learn about all of our programs to support your advocacy career.

  • Federal Government Panel 2:00pm - 2:45pm ET

    Professionals in victim services across multiple divisions of the federal government will discuss their roles/responsibilities and share tips for success in their field. Featuring: Peace Corps Office of Victim Advocacy, FBI Victim Services Division, Magellan Federal and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Victim/Witness Assistance Program.

  • National Non-Profits Panel 3:00pm - 4:00pm ET

    Professionals across various roles in national non-profits will discuss their roles/responsibilities and share tips for success in their field. Featuring: National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), Safe Haven for Pets, National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) and Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence.

Day 2: Areas of Advocacy

  • System-Based Advocacy Panel 12:00pm - 12:45pm ET

    Victim advocates representing system-based agencies across the country will discuss their roles and responsibilities, sharing what it is like to work directly with survivors in their individual setting. Featuring: Winchester V/W Program, Tallahassee PD, Loudoun County Probation Victim Services, and Maine Attorney General's Office.

  • Campus Advocacy Panel 1:00pm - 1:45pm ET

    Individuals across the spectrum of campus victim services roles will discuss their jobs and how they provide services to survivors on college campuses. Featuring: Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, University of Cincinnati and University of South Carolina

  • Military Advocacy Panel 2:00pm - 2:45pm ET

    This panel of past military advocates will discuss the role of victim advocates on military bases, credentialing and the many career paths that connect to victim services in the military.

  • Community-Based Advocacy Panel 3:00pm - 3:45pm ET

    Advocates that provide victim services in a community context will share their roles and how they engage directly with survivors of crime in their unique context. Featuring: Progressive Transitions, Homicide Survivors, Inc., and Children's Advocacy Center of Georgia.

Day 3: Career Tools and Networking

  • Preparing for Virtual Interviews 12:00pm - 12:45pm ET

    Learn tips from NOVA staff on how to best prepare for virtual interviews, followed by a Q&A.

  • Building and Updating Your CV 1:00pm - 1:45pm ET

    Gain best practices on writing and updating your CV/resume for jobs in the victim services field, followed by Q&A.

  • Meet our Partner Agencies 2:00pm - 3:00pm ET

    Hear from participating partner agencies (some have current job openings)! Get a chance to network, ask them questions about their careers and learn more about the roles they are hiring.
